Walmart E-Transit
CASE STUDY
Walmart has a rich history of transformation. The latest approach leverages technology to transform drivers' lives by eliminating friction and unlocking their potential. We provide Better Visibility: Our mission is to know what we own and where we own it in near real-time. The integration allows stores to anticipate load arrival times and labor around truck deliveries.Additionally, Walmart customers will benefit from this increased visibility and efficiency. Walmart has one of the largest private fleets in the country. Our onboard technology helps drivers communicate more closely with stores by integrating with store applications, providing a more seamless delivery process. As the driver approaches a store, geolocation technology detects the driver’s location, sending push notifications to store associates’ handheld devices, allowing them to plan for quick unloading and turnaround. We can also deploy secure audio messages directly with our drivers to ensure they receive essential information while in the field. Productivity and Retention: By removing manual touchpoints, we aim to create a frictionless workflow so drivers can spend more time driving the truck and less time waiting at fulfillment centers or store deliveries. Platform Science and NTransit integrate seamlessly to coordinate scheduling and navigation, so drivers can hit the road to their next destination without keying it in. Like any job, unplanned activities sometimes require the driver to do more than steer the truck. Our new system creates accountability by allowing drivers to communicate what they accomplished on the road. That way, they are compensated for miles and non-driving activities beyond what was initially planned.

PROJECT CHALLENGES AND PROBLEMS
To design intuitive products that would ensure 100% safety for the vehicle drivers and fleet managers, it was essential for me to understand how Walmart's workflow was, from fleet manager accessing large amounts of data, to drivers connecting to scheduling and routes. In addition, it was essential to keep in mind that fleet managers and drivers come from different cultures and levels of education, so I had to design interfaces that worked for everyone worldwide.
To help fleet managers operate their fleets more efficiently, providing instant odometer readings, diagnostic trouble codes, recall notifications, trackable maintenance alerts, and information around engine hours and oil life. It will even relay warning lights so that fleet managers can resolve issues faster, improve uptime and potentially avoid costly repairs. All this information is conveyed to fleet operators through a dashboard on a computer that makes it easy to see where their fleet stands without relying on drivers to report issues.
WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS WE ARE TRYING TO SOLVE?
WHAT ARE THE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PRODUCTS?
Ford Pro Telematics Essentials is a complimentary web-based application that is available to all commercial customers using gas-powered Ford vehicles with embedded modems. As the only complimentary telematics service offering by an automaker for the life of a Ford vehicle, Ford Pro Telematics Essentials is not just making vehicle data more accessible – it also is providing new features to customers such as easy maintenance scheduling to help boost fleet uptime and productivity.

WHO ARE THE USERS OF THE APPLICATION?
With all of my products and problems to solve, Design Thinking is the most reliable framework for innovation. While remaining Agile, this is a process that targets product development on actual user needs and avoids building products solely based on assumptions. I practice this in an iterative manner.
EMPATHIZE: Learning about the audience for whom I am designing, by observation and interviews. Collecting qualitative data. Who is my user? What matters the most to this person?
DEFINE: Create a point of view that is based on user needs and insights. What are their needs?
IDEATE: Brainstorm and come up with as many creative solutions as possible.
PROTOTYPE: Build a representation of one or more of the ideas to show others. How can I show my idea?
TEST: Share the prototyped idea with the original users for feedback generation. What worked? What didn't?
DESIGN THINKING PROCESS
RESEARCH & INTERVIEWS
In order to begin my design process, I met with Fleet Managers from various parts of the organization in order to understand their business requirements to run detailed reports for their fleet vehicles and drivers.
MODERATE REMOTE INTERVIEWS To get a better understanding of the problem, I conducted user interviews remotely with fleet managers. Through the interviews, I wanted to discover their needs, habits and software expectations. What would make them more productive and create fewer pain points at work? these were of unforeseen problems that needed solutions.
ANALYSIS & IDEATION
As I presented my findings to my team and stakeholders, I realized that the problems users were face with stemmed with the lack of interface components, lack of detailed data to an Intuitive user interphase with data graphs and data tables . Vehicle safety and anti-theft options, Geo tracking, customizable data export options, battery charging preconditioning scheduling.
HIGH FILDELITY MOCKUPS
The next step was to create high fidelity mockups of the full user interface. The mockups were presented to the test users and stakeholders for analysis and review.
